Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes off the coast of Ilocos Sur

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred in the waters of Ilocos Sur on Monday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The tectonic earthquake was recorded at 9:36 a.m. with epicenter at 17.26°N, 119.95°E - 054 km S 82° W of the town of San Esteban, PHIVOLCS said.

It had a depth of 16 km.

The earthquake was felt in the following areas, PHIVOLCS said:

Intensity IV - Bantay, and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Intensity III - Cabugao, Caoayan, Magsingal, San Ildefonso, San Juan, San Vicente, Santa, Santa Catalina, Santo Domingo, and Sinait, Ilocos Sur

Intensity II - Alilem, Banayoyo, Burgos, City of Candon, Cervantes, Galimuyod, Gregorio del Pilar, Lidlidda, Nagbukel, Narvacan, Salcedo, San Emilio, San Esteban, Santa Cruz, Santa Maria, Santiago, Sigay, Sugpon, Suyo, and Tagudin in Ilocos Sur; Balaoan, Bangar, Bauang, Caba, City of San Fernando, Santol, and Sudipen in La Union

Intensity I - Aringay, La Union

PHIVOLCS said no damage and aftershocks are expected.

The earthquake was first reported by PHIVOLCS as having magnitude 5.0, before being downgraded to magnitude 4.8 in an update. —KG, GMA Integrated News
