Effusive eruption, minor strombolian activity recorded for 43rd day in Mayon — PHIVOLCS

Effusive eruption with minor strombolian activity was recorded at Mayon Volcano for the 43rd consecutive day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The minor strombolian activity was logged at 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17.

“Effusive eruption with Minor strombolian activity at Mayon Volcano continues for the 43rd consecutive day, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or ‘uson’, and rockfall,” said PHIVOLCS.

“Lava flows have reached radial distances from the crater of ~3.8km in the Basud (east), ~1.6km in the Bonga (southeast), and ~1.3km in the Mi-isi Gullies (south) as of 05 February 2026,” the agency added.

PHIVOLCS also recorded 10 volcanic earthquakes, 318 rockfalls, and 33 pyroclastic density current signals or uson.

Crater glow was also observed. On Feb. 16, Monday, the volcano released 4,650 tonnes of sulfuric dioxide. Volcanologists also observed moderate evaporation and groud deformation.

Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Mayon Volcano. The public is strongly prohibited from entering the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone due to the threats of PDCs, lava flows, rockfalls, and other volcanic hazards. Aircrafts are not allowed to travel over the volcano.

Residents within the 8-kilometer radius have been advised to prepare for evacuation in case the situation escalates to Alert Level 4.

The PHIVOLCS reminded the public that the following activities may occur: rockfall, falling chunks of lava or rocks, uson, medium explosion, lahar flow during rainy periods. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BAP, GMA Integrated News
