Explosive eruption seen at Kanlaon Volcano – PHIVOLCS

A moderately explosive eruption occurred at the Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported on Thursday afternoon.

The eruption happened at 4:38 p.m. and lasted for two minutes based on the seismic record, the state volcanologists said.

“This event generated a dark gray eruption plume that rose 2,000 meters above the crater before drifting southwest,” PHIVOLCS said.

It added that pyroclastic density currents (PDCS) or “uson” descended on the southern and southwestern upper slopes within one kilometer of Kanlaon Volcano’s summit crater.

Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano and entry into its four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.
