Over 30 families in La Carlota City flee after Kanlaon volcano eruption
More than 30 families in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental have evacuated after Kanlaon Volcano erupted on Thursday afternoon.
According to the report of GMA Regional TV’s Aileen Pedreso in “Saksi”, the dark grey plume and ashes from the eruption brought fear to the residents in communities surrounding the volcano.
Several videos taken by residents captured their concerns, with some saying prayers while others expressed their awe as the volcano spewed a two-kilometer high column of smoke into the air.
A moderately explosive eruption occurred at the Kanlaon Volcano which lasted for two minutes, the the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
Pyroclastic density currents (PDCS) or “uson” also descended on the southern and southwestern upper slopes within one kilometer of Kanlaon Volcano’s summit crater.
Following the eruption, an ash fall was experienced over parts of Barangay Ma-ao in Bago, Negros Occidental.
The Negros Occidental PDRRMO’s assesment on areas affected by ash fall is ongoing. There are over 27 barangays in Negros Occidental that were affected by ashfall, the report said.
Meanwhile, most of the evacuees voluntarily fled their homes due to concerns of another possible eruption of Kanlaon.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano and entry into its four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News
