LOOK: PHIVOLCS releases computer simulations of Kanlaon Volcano ash dispersion

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has released computer simulations of the ash dispersion following the moderately explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on Thursday night, February 26.

In a post on its Facebook page, PHIVOLCS said it used Ash3D, an ash dispersion model, to guide volcanologists and local government units in monitoring the ashfall due to the volcano’s brief, two-minute eruption.

“Ang mga mapa ng kapal at distribusyon ng ashfall, dispersal (pagkalat), at taas ng ulap ay magagamit upang matukoy at ma-verify ang mga lugar na apektado o maaring maapektuhan ng ashfall,” the agency said.

(The maps of the density and distribution of the ashfall, dispersal, and height of the plumes can be used to identify and verify the areas that are affected or might be affected by ashfall.)

The Facebook post was accompanied by a video of the computer simulations of Kanlaon Volcano’s moderately explosive eruption “to guide ashfall impact monitoring for the communities.”

The maps were generated using plume height data from PHIVOLCS.

The agency also reminded residents to take precautionary measures amid the continuing ash emissions from the volcano. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
