LOOK: Mayon Volcano's effusive eruption for 55th consecutive day
Mayon Volcano continued its effusive eruption for the 55th consecutive day on Sunday, March 1 with lava effusions and collapse from its summit crater, and minor strombolian activity, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.
In posts on its social media accounts, PHIVOLCS shared time-lapse footages of the lava effusion and collapse from the volcano’s summit crater recorder at 1:58 a.m. and 6:56 p.m. Sunday.
Another footage recorded at 7:19 p.m. Sunday showed minor strombolian activity.
State volcanologists said Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption for the 55th consecutive day generated incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson”, and rockfalls.
PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 3 remains in effect over the volcano, hence entry into its six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.
In a separate, earlier update, PHIVOLCS said lava effusion with lava flow occurred on Basud (3.8 km), Bonga (2.6 km) and Mi-isi (1.3 km) gullies, with minor strombolian activity and ash emissions.
There were 22 volcanic earthquakes, 310 rockfall events, and seven PDC signals logged from 12 a.m. of February 28 to 12 a.m. of March 1.
