Bulusan Volcano sees more seismic activity, remains at Alert Level 0 — PHIVOLCS
State volcanologists have observed increased seismic activity at Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon, but it remains under Alert Level 0, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said on Monday.
PHIVOLCS reported that a total of 49 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded since 3 a.m. on February 26, 2026.
“Of these, sixteen (16) were volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes associated with rock fracturing 3 to 6 kilometers beneath the northern and southeastern edifice of Bulusan Volcano,” the agency said.
However, degassing activity and sulfur dioxide (SO?) emissions from the volcano have remained weak.
“Degassing from the summit crater and active vents has been very weak to moderate over the past few days when the volcano was visible,” PHIVOLCS said.
“Volcanic sulfur dioxide emissions from the summit vents were too weak to be detected during the last measurement on February 26, 2026.”
With Alert Level 0 still in effect, PHIVOLCS said no magmatic eruption is expected.
Nevertheless, state volcanologists warned that the recent increase in seismic activity “may indicate hydrothermal processes beneath the volcano and could lead to sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.”
