LOOK: Minor strombolian activity on 58th day of Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Wednesday evening recorded the occurrence of minor strombolian activity on Mayon Volcano.

State volcanologists shared a still image and time-lapse footages – with one from a thermal camera – taken at 8:33 p.m. on its social media accounts.

Minor strombolian activity refers to low-level, intermittent, and relatively mild volcanic explosions.

Mayon Volcano continued its effusive eruption for the 58th consecutive day and generated incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson,” and rockfalls.

PHIVOLCS warned that Alert Level 3 is still in effect over the volcano and that entry into its six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited.

In an earlier post, the agency said it recorded lava effusion with lava flow on Basud (3.8 km), Bonga (2.7 km), and Mi-isi (1.3 km) gullies, with minor strombolian activity and ash emissions.

PHIVOLCS also logged 21 volcanic earthquakes, 278 rockfall events, and seven PDC signals as of 12 a.m. of March 4.

The volcano had a moderate emission of plumes that rose 500 meters above the crater and drifted west-southwest and southwest directions.

The volcano edifice remains inflated and the crater glow visible to the naked eye. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
