BIR, PNP seize over 185,000 packs of illicit cigarettes in Northern, Central Luzon

Simultaneous operations of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) led to the seizure of 185,233 packs of illegal cigarettes with an estimated tax liability of ₱43 million.

A total of 76 simultaneous operations were conducted in North and Central Luzon last March 2, the BIR said.

Authorities seized a total of 183,558 packs of smuggled cigarette brands from 51 stores, with a total tax liability of P41,786,250.02 in Northern Luzon.

Meanwhile, in Central Luzon, authorities also conducted a parallel enforcement action targeting retailers of untaxed tobacco products.

A total of nine establishments were found in possession of illicit excisable articles, resulting in the seizure of 1,675 packs of untaxed cigarettes with an estimated total tax liability of P1,363,271.14, inclusive of administrative penalties.

The store owners found with these contraband are facing appropriate charges under the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997, as amended, and other applicable laws for violations related to excise taxes, value-added taxes, and graphic health warning compliance.

These operations were part of BIR’s sustained enforcement drive and will continue nationwide, in line with its mandate to safeguard public funds and ensure that all excisable products in the market are properly taxed.

The BIR also vowed to continue supporting the vision of a Bagong Pilipinas, one where public service is efficient, transparent, and responsive. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
