4 suspects in death of Cavite 'hazing' victim surrender
Four suspects in the death of 19-year-old freshman maritime student Mark Kenneth Alcedo in Cavite have surrendered to authorities.
An information from the Philippine National Police Regional Office (PNP-PRO) IV-A showed the suspects surrendered to the local government unit of General Trias before 9 p.m. of Sunday, March 8, according to the report of GMA Integrated News' Marisol Abdurahman on “Balitanghali” Monday.
The suspects were accompanied by their legal counsel and members of the Tau Gamma Phi National Council. They also executed a written statement and was personally received by the chief-of-staff of General Trias police.
They are now under the custody of General Trias PNP.
As of March 9, a total of six suspects surrendered, of which two initially surrendered on March 7 including the driver of the vehicle that brought the victim to the hospital.
Alcedo, a 19-year-old maritime student, died after allegedly undergoing violent fraternity initiation rites, which sparked renewed calls to strictly enforce the country's anti-hazing law.
On March 1, he was brought to a hospital in General Trias by three individuals who initially claimed he was a victim of a hit-and-run.
Autopsy showed he died from "severe blunt force trauma to the lower extremities," indicating intense beating on his legs.
Alcedo sustained a hematoma with abrasion on the lip and a tooth fracture. He also suffered abrasions to his abdomen, fingers, knees, and toes, as well as hematoma on his leg.
A square indentation and chili seeds were also observed on his private part.
