LOOK: Mayon Volcano’s 63rd straight day of effusive eruption

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Monday morning logged minor strombolian activity on Mayon Volcano, which remains under Alert Level 3.

State volcanologists shared a close-up time-lapse footage of the volcano recorded at 9 a.m. of March 9 on PHIVOLCS’ social media accounts.

Minor strombolian activity refers to low-level, intermittent, and relatively mild volcanic explosions.

Today is the 63rd consecutive day of Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption, which generated incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson,” and rockfall events.

PHIVOLCS reiterated its warning that entry into the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited under Alert Level 3.

In an earlier Facebook post, PHIVOLCS said it recorded lava effusion with lava flow on Basud (3.8 km), Bonga (3.1 km) and Mi-isi (1.3 km) gullies from 12 a.m. of March 8 to 12 a.m. of March 9, with occasional minor strombolian activity.

It also logged 21 volcanic earthquakes, 319 rockfall events and three PDC signals.
