Dumaguete bishop calls for fair pricing, care for marginalized amid Middle East conflict

Amid the armed conflict in the Middle East, a Catholic bishop on Thursday called for fair pricing of goods and care for the marginalized.

In a CBCP News report, Bishop Julito Cortes of the Diocese of Dumaguete said ordinary people, such as farmers, fisherfolk, and those in the transport sector, shoulder the rising costs of fuel and basic commodities.

“I appeal to all sectors of society to act with responsibility and compassion — especially in ensuring fair pricing of goods and in showing greater concern for the poor and the most vulnerable among us,” Cortes said in a pastoral letter.

He urged parishes, religious organizations, and ministries to help those affected by the situation.

The prelate also encouraged Catholics to continue trusting the Lord and pray the Holy Rosary for peace in the Middle East and the world.

Cortes urged the public to use social media prudently and rely only on credible sources.

Conflict in the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28.

This led to a massive fuel price hike in the country, with staggered increases set for this week.

Earlier, Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David said the Philippine government should ensure that the burden of the country’s tax system is distributed fairly among taxpayers and used for the common good, as the Middle East conflict affects the livelihood of thousands of overseas Filipino workers. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BAP, GMA Integrated News
