The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Monday announced the surrender and extraction of three alleged members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and Dawlah Islamiyah (DI).

In a statement, the NBI said the three were extracted during an operation on March 14 in Mamasapano, Maguindanao del Sur.

Following their surrender, the individuals were transported to a secure facility for documentation, debriefing, and security processing, the bureau added.

“This successful surrender demonstrates that even those who have once taken the path of armed extremism can still choose peace,” NBI Director Melvin Matibag said.

The three also turned over high-powered firearms and weapons, including:

  • 1 Barrett rifle
  • 1 M79 grenade launcher
  • 1 M203 grenade launcher tube
  • 1 Mosin rifle with magazine
  • 2 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition

The NBI said the operation stemmed from information that individuals affiliated with extremist groups had expressed intentions to surrender.

“The National Bureau of Investigation remains committed to supporting government efforts that provide safe and lawful avenues for individuals who wish to abandon violence and reintegrate into society,” Matibag said.

“Through cooperation with our partner security agencies and the community, we will continue to work toward lasting peace and stability in the Bangsamoro region,” he added.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
