DepEd expands rollout of modular classrooms in Davao del Norte
The Department of Education (DepEd) has expanded the rollout of modular “Learning Continuity Spaces” (LCS) in Davao del Norte to ensure classes continue in areas affected by disasters and infrastructure damage.
The latest installations were set up at the Davao del Norte Regional Sports Academy in Tagum City, following similar deployments in Cebu and Masbate.
DepEd said the modular classrooms are designed to serve as temporary learning spaces while permanent school buildings are being repaired after disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes.
Each unit can accommodate up to 45 learners and is built with features such as storm guards to withstand strong winds. Two models were introduced: an elevated version for flood-prone areas and a slab-on-ground model for stable sites.
The agency said the structures can be rapidly deployed to minimize class disruptions, addressing a recurring issue in disaster-affected communities where damaged classrooms delay learning.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the initiative aims to ensure continuity of education even during emergencies.
“We are implementing these Learning Continuity Spaces to ensure that learning continues under any circumstance,” Angara said.
The project forms part of DepEd’s broader effort to address classroom shortages and improve disaster resilience in schools.
Under the 2026 Disaster Preparedness and Response Fund, DepEd aims to install 1,380 LCS units nationwide to provide immediate learning spaces in high-risk areas while permanent classrooms are being constructed.
The provincial government of Davao del Norte supported the rollout by providing space for the facilities through a usufruct agreement. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
