LOOK: Lava fountaining on Day 77 of Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption
State volcanologists observed short-lived lava fountaining and minor strombolian activity at Mayon Volcano on Sunday morning.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared a time lapse video from the Mayon Volcano Observatory and photos of the volcanic activity on its social media accounts.
The short-lived lava fountaining was observed at around 5:20 a.m. of March 22 while the minor strombolian activity was logged at around 9:14 a.m. and 9:23 a.m.
Minor strombolian activity refers to low-level, intermittent, and relatively mild volcanic explosions.
PHIVOLCS said these events produced grayish ash plumes that rose up to 800 meters.
Mayon Volcano continued its effusive eruption for the 77th consecutive day, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson,” and rockfalls.
State volcanologists reminded residents that Alert Level 3 is still in effect and that entry into the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is prohibited. — JMA, GMA Integrated News
