5 policemen dead in ambush in Maguindanao del Sur
Five Philippine National Police personnel were killed in an attack in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, on Saturday night, PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said.
In a statement, Nartatez said members of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company were attacked by unidentified armed suspects while on their way back to their detachment following patrol and police visibility operations.
In addition to the five fatalities, Nartatez said three police officers were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment.
"This heinous act is a direct assault on law enforcement and a threat to peace and order. The Philippine National Police has launched intensified hot pursuit operations, in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, to ensure the swift identification and arrest of the perpetrators," he said.
"We assure the public that all necessary measures are being undertaken to bring those responsible to justice."
Bangsamoro Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua said that a thorough investigation by concerned ministries is underway.
He also extended his sympathies to the families of the victims and said that necessary assistance would be provided.
Macacua also called on the Bangsamoro people to remain calm, exercise vigilance, and provide any information that may aid in the ongoing investigation. — VBL, GMA Integrated News
