DOST-PHIVOLCS on Sunday reported continued eruptive activity at Mayon Volcano, including minor explosive events that generated ash plumes and sustained lava flows.

In an update, Phivolcs said time-lapse footage captured by its Quick Response Team and the Mayon Volcano Observatory showed minor Strombolian eruptions at 12:30 a.m. and 6:46 a.m. on March 29.

These events produced ash clouds that rose about 500 meters before drifting southwest, Phivolcs said.

The agency said the volcano’s effusive eruption has now reached its 83rd consecutive day, characterized by the steady outpouring of lava, as well as the occurrence of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), locally known as “uson,” and rockfalls.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, indicating a high level of unrest and the possibility of hazardous eruptions.

Authorities reiterated that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone is strictly prohibited due to the risk of sudden explosions, lava flows, ashfall, and other volcanic hazards.

Local government units in Albay have been advised to maintain heightened vigilance and ensure preparedness measures are in place, particularly in communities that may be affected by ashfall and volcanic debris.—MCG, GMA Integrated News
