PHIVOLCS: Persistent weak lava fountaining on Day 85 of Mayon’s effusive eruption

State volcanologists logged a persistent episode of weak lava fountaining at the Mayon Volcano on Monday evening, the 85th consecutive day of its effusive eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared footage from the DOST-PHIVOLCS Quick Response Team and Mayon Volcano Observatory of the volcano’s strombolian activity recorded at 7:42 p.m. Monday.

State volcanologists said there was a “persistent episode of weak lava fountaining” that produced 250 meter incandescent fountains and ash plumes that rose 250 meters before drifting southwest.

Mayon Volcano is on its 85th consecutive day of effusive eruption and continues to generate incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson,” and rockfalls.

On Sunday night, PHIVOLCS also noted short-lived lava fountaining that also produced ash clouds that rose 200 to 600 meters before drifting southwest to south-southwest.

PHIVOLCS reiterated that Alert Level 3 is still in effect and that entry into the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is prohibited. — JMA, GMA News
