Mayon Volcano continues short-lived lava fountaining on Tuesday

Mayon Volcano continued its short-lived lava fountaining on Tuesday evening, March 31 amid its ongoing effusive eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared thermal camera footage of the volcano’s short-duration lava fountaining recorded at 8:29 p.m. Tuesday.

The footage was taken by the Upper Lidong Observation Station (VMUL).

The event’s seismic signal waveform and frequency spectra was recorded by the Anoling (VMAN), Camp One (VMCO), and Upper Slope (VMUS) Observation Stations.

State volcanologists said the lava fountaining “registered as harmonic tremor with distinct overtones in the frequency spectra.”

Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption has been ongoing for the past three months, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson,” and rockfalls.

PHIVOLCS logged short-lived or weak lava fountaining at the volcano on Sunday night and Monday evening, which both caused ash plumes.

It reiterated that Alert Level 3 is still in effect and that entry into the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is prohibited. — JMA, GMA News
