LOOK: Mayon Volcano’s lava fountaining anew on Wednesday
State volcanologists logged another incident of short-lived lava fountaining on Mayon Volcano on Wednesday afternoon as the volcano continued its effusive eruption for the 85th day.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared time-lapse camera footages of the “short-duration lava fountaining” recorded at 5:49 p.m., April 1.
The footages – shared on PHIVOLCS’ social media pages – were recorded by the Mayon Volcano Observatory Ligñon Hill (VMLH) IP camera and RasPi camera.
“The corresponding infrasound signal was recorded by the Camp One Observation Station (VMCO, 743m asl) and rendered into audible sound using the software Sonify (by Liam Toney, USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center),” state volcanologists added.
PHIVOLCS has logged short-lived or weak lava fountaining at Mayon Volcano since Sunday night.
Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption has been ongoing for the past 85 dayss, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson,” and rockfalls.
Alert Level 3 is still in effect and that entry into the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is prohibited. — JMA, GMA News
