WATCH: Close-up footage of lava fountaining at Mayon Volcano

State volcanologists logged another episode of short-lived lava fountaining and minor strombolian activity at the Mayon Volcano on Monday evening, April 6, amid its third month of effusive eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared close-up footages of the volcanic activity on its social media accounts.

The short-duration lava fountaining at Mayon Volcano’s summit crater was recorded at 7:07 p.m. Monday.

The close-up footages – which showed lava bursting out of the crater – were recorded by the Mayon Volcano Observatory.

PHIVOLCS also observed minor strombolian activity – or low-level, intermittent explosions that launch lava fountains and magma fragments from the crater.

Last week, state volcanologists also logged several instances of short-lived lava fountaining at the volcano, which remains under Alert Level 3.

Mayon Volcano’s effusive eruption has been going on for the 90th consecutive day, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson,” and rockfalls.

PHIVOLCS reiterated its warning that entry into the volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is prohibited under Alert Level 3. — JMA, GMA News
