Cebu Archbishop's coral reef project supports local marine ecosystem
Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy led the installation of a "fish condo" or artificial coral reef system off the waters of Bantayan Island as part of efforts to protect marine biodiversity.
In a statement posted in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cebu, Archbishop Uy was joined by representatives of the local government unit, the Philippine National Police, Coast Guard, the donor and fisherfolk in the activity.
"More than a marine effort, the initiative stands as a concrete response to the call to care for creation. By restoring marine biodiversity, it creates safe habitats for fish, strengthens the livelihood of local fisherfolk, and promotes sustainable stewardship of the sea," according to the statement.
"In nurturing life beneath the waters, the Church affirms its mission to safeguard God’s creation—ensuring that its richness and beauty may continue to sustain and inspire future generations."
Bantayan Island, located west of the northern end of Cebu, is known for its pristine beaches and tourist spots. The island is located in the Visayan Sea, which is known for its rich marine biodiversity and plagued by issues including dynamite fishing and overfishing. — BAP, GMA News
