Rizal fisherfolk affected by fuel price hike receive aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation
Fisherfolk from Cardona, Rizal are struggling with the lack of catch as well as with the increasing prices of fuel.
According to a report on "24 Oras," Wednesday, fishing is the main source of income in Cardona.
Fisherman Rico Teodoro said that since October 2025, their catch has decreased and the fish they get are thinner. One of the possible reasons would be the lower quality of water in Laguna De Bay.
"Talagang humirap na po talaga pagdaragat," Rico said. "Pang ulam lang eh naghati-hati pa po kami."
Additionally, if the fisherfolk previously earned P600, they said they now only earn less than P200.
"Wala namang nahuli. Lugi po 'pag nasilat. Sa pagdaragat, ang pinaka gastos pa sa isang palaot eh libo po eh. Siguro mga nasa P1,200 ganun, 'yung mga huli minsan nasa isang libo lang 'yung halaga, tatlo po 'yung maghahati-hati dun. Minsan wala nang maiuwi sa pamilya," Rico said.
The GMA Kapuso Foundation headed to Cardona to help out the fisherfolk under Operation Bayanihan. A total of 1,600 individuals were given food packs.
"Malaking tulong po 'yun sa 'min. Maraming-maraming salamat po sa GMA," Rico said.
