Kanlaon Volcano emits 1,200-meter ash plume —PHIVOLCS

A 1,200-meter-high ash plume was observed from Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island on Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

“Part of kanyang Alert Level 2 status. So in-expect natin ‘yan na every now and then may pagbubuga ng abo sa Kanlaon Volcano,” PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol told Super Radyo dzBB in an interview.

(This is part of its Alert Level 2 status. So we expect that every now and then there will be ash emission from Kanlaon Volcano.)

“In fact, for the month of March, last month, we had 24 ash emission events,” he added.

The activity is likely caused by pressure buildup beneath the volcano from steam-driven or hydrothermal processes, according to Bacolcol.

In the past 24 hours, 12 volcanic earthquakes were recorded over the volcano.

Sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 1,524 tonnes per day, which is lower than the peak recorded this year at 4,126 tonnes per day on January 9.

Alert Level 2 remains over Kanlaon Volcano, which means there is an increased unrest. Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur in the volcano.

Under Alert Level 2, entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the flying of any aircraft close to the volcano are prohibited. —AOL, GMA News
