3 dead in separate stabbing, shooting incidents in Cebu, Iloilo
Three people were killed in separate stabbing and shooting incidents in Cebu and Iloilo, including a barangay tanod who tried to intervene in a fight, authorities said.
According to a report by JP Soriano on “24 Oras Weekend,” two people died in a violent altercation in Barangay Tiringan, Janiuay, Iloilo province, on the eve of a local fiesta.
Police said the victim was sitting outside his home when a suspect approached and stabbed him.
A struggle ensued, prompting a barangay tanod to respond and attempt to break up the fight, but he was also stabbed.
The victim’s brother witnessed the incident and tried to help but was likewise allegedly attacked by the suspect. He then reportedly shot the suspect.
Police said the shooting stemmed from a long-standing dispute between the parties.
“So the reason why there was a stabbing and shooting was due to a past conflict that had already happened,” said Police Capt. Marlon Perez, Janiuay police chief.
Both the victim and the barangay tanod were declared dead on arrival at a hospital.
The victim’s wife said there had long been a feud between the families involved, while the suspect’s relatives disputed this account, saying it was the victim’s brother who fired the fatal shot.
A homemade shotgun allegedly used in the incident was turned over to police. Authorities are holding the victim’s brother, who has been identified as the one who shot the suspect.
The suspect’s family is preparing to file charges.
In Bantayan, Cebu, a 26-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after allegedly being stabbed 20 times by her live-in partner.
Police said the suspect had just woken up when he and the victim had an argument that escalated into violence.
The suspect is now in custody and faces frustrated murder charges.
Authorities said he has expressed remorse over the incident.
In Calinog, Iloilo, a barangay tanod was killed after being stabbed by at least three men. Three of his cousins were also wounded.
Police Maj. Myles Deron, Calinog police chief, said the victims were on their way to a fiesta dance when they were ambushed. Authorities are still determining the identities of the other suspects, while one has already been identified.
