Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island emitted ash anew on Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

This resulted in grayish plumes that rose up to 400 meters above the crater before drifting in the southwest direction.

The IP camera of the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory–Canlaon City (KVO-CC) was able to record a time-lapse footage of the ash emission at 7:05 a.m.

"Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano," PHIVOLCS said.

On Sunday, Kanlaon Volcano also had three ash emission events lasting from 47 to 129 minutes long, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin summarizing its 24-hour observation from 12 a.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. Monday.

A total of 150 volcanic earthquakes were also recorded, which included four volcanic tremors lasting 40 to 100 minutes long.

The volcano also emitted 610 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Sunday.

Moderate plumes also rose up to 400 meters tall before drifting southwest.

PHIVOLCS said at Alert Level 2 (Increased Unrest), Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, poses possible hazards such as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activity.

It reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and flying aircraft close to the volcano should be prohibited. —KG, GMA News
