9 Chinese, 1 Pinoy nabbed for alleged illegal mining in Surigao del Sur
At least nine Chinese nationals and one Filipino were arrested after authorities dismantled an alleged large-scale illegal mining operation in Carac-an Downstream, Barangay Lobo, Cantilan, Surigao del Sur.
Personnel of the Police Regional Intelligence Division led the operation, along with other law enforcement units and other government agencies.
During the operation, authorities seized several heavy equipment and mining paraphernalia worth more than P50 million from three identified sites, including excavators, pay loaders, dump trucks, generator sets.
The confiscated items were turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for case build-up.
The individuals arrested were taken into police custody and will face charges for violation of the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 (RA 7942) and other environmental and immigration laws.
The Police Regional Office-Caraga (PRO-13) assured the public that authorities will continue its vigilance and efforts in curbing illegal mining and other environmental violations across the region.
“This successful operation reflects our firm resolve to protect our natural resources and enforce environmental laws without fear or favor. Illegal mining not only destroys our environment but also undermines lawful industries and community safety,” PRO-13 Director, Brigadier General Marcial Mariano Magistrado IV, said.
“Let this serve a stern warning – PRO-13, together with our partner agencies, will relentlessly pursue and hold accountable those who exploit our resources for personal gain,” he added. —GMA Regional TV
