Number of fatalities in truck crash in Davao City rises to 6
The number of people who died when a truck crashed into a barangay gymnasium in Davao City over the weekend has climbed to 6, up from the four reported initially.
Police said the truck, which came from Bukidnon, reportedly lost its brakes and its tire exploded, causing it to crash into the gymnasium of Barangay Marilog Proper, where a seminar was being held morning on Saturday, April 11, 2026.
The impact damaged a portion of the gymnasium, a waiting shed, and several parked motorcycles. The truck also spilled its cargo of biscuits.
Among those who died were a barangay tanod, who was attending the seminar, his wife, and the truck driver and his two companions. Six others were injured, including a 71-year-old man who was inside the gym during the crash. He was rushed to a hospital but died later.
Another barangay tanod said they were listening to a lecture when part of the gym collapsed suddenly, prompting them to run for safety.
“Naminaw rapud mi sa lecture katong mitakilid na mao to dagan nami didto sa kilid kung wa ko kadagan patay pud ko,” a barangay tanod, Amben Paterno, said.
Authorities said the operator may face charges.
Police reminded motorists to check their vehicles regularly.
—Jandi Esteban, GMA Regional TV News
