WATCH: Minor strombolian activity, grass fire on Day 97 of Mayon’s effusive eruption

Mayon Volcano continued its effusive eruption for the 97th day as state volcanologists observed minor strombolian activity at its summit crater on Monday night.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared sped-up camera footage of the low-level volcanic activity recorded from 6:52 p.m. to 6:55 p.m. of April 13.

The footage captured by the Mayon Volcano Observatory also showed a then-ongoing grassfire below the Bonga Gully.

Minor strombolian activity are low-level, intermittent explosions that launch lava fountains and magma fragments from the crater.

Mayon Volcano is on its 97th consecutive day of effusive eruption, producing incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDC) or “uson,” and frequent rockfalls.

PHIVOLCS reiterated its warning that Alert Level 3 is still in effect over Mayon Volcano and that entry into its six-kilometer permanent danger zone is prohibited. — JMA, GMA News
