5 boats intercepted off Aklan waters for illegal fishing – PNP
Authorities arrested five individuals after intercepting five fishing boats for alleged illegal fishing in the waters off Tangalan, Aklan last week, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.
In a statement, the PNP said its Maritime Group carried out a seaborne patrol operation on April 15, which led to the interception of five fishing boats, whose occupants were unable to present the required permits and documents.
This was in violation of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998.
Five individuals were taken into custody while the fishing boats, equipment, and their catch valued P2.156 million were confiscated and documented for proper disposition.
They were allegedly engaged in unauthorized fishing activities within municipal waters.
PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said sustained maritime operations are not only about law enforcement, but safeguarding the country’s future food security.
“Hindi natin palalampasin ang mga lumalabag sa ating batas sa karagatan (We will not allow violations of our maritime laws). This is about protecting our fisherfolk and ensuring that our marine resources are preserved for the next generation,” Nartatez said.
The PNP Maritime Group warned that its operations against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing will continue as part of ongoing efforts to protect marine ecosystems and support legitimate fishing communities. — JMA, GMA News
