Tight security set for Manaoag Marian celebration
Authorities have deployed more than 600 police officers ahead of the 100th canonical coronation of the Our Lady of Manaoag, as the town prepares for an influx of over one million devotees.
Police and force multipliers underwent final briefings hours before deployment, with officials saying security measures are in place for the historic religious event.
“Ang PPO ay handang-handa na sa canonical celebration,” Police Colonel Arbel Mercullo, director of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, said.
Local officials said accommodation in the town is already at full capacity, with hotels and transient houses fully booked ahead of the celebration.
Mayor Jeremy Agerico Rosario said crowd control, traffic management, and security remain key challenges due to the expected turnout.
“Sa dami ng pupunta kabilang sa challenges ang traffic, security pero we have 11 medical teams,” he said.
The local government said the celebration will proceed regardless of weather conditions and advised devotees to prepare for both heat and rain.
The canonical coronation is scheduled in the morning on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, followed by a mass and procession in the afternoon, marking a major milestone for one of the country’s most visited pilgrimage sites. — GMA Regional TV
