Mayon Volcano had 5 volcanic earthquakes, lava effusion
Mayon Volcano in Albay had five volcanic earthquakes and lava effusion on Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Monday in its bulletin.
These included four volcanic tremors lasting one to three minutes long.
A total of 411 rockfalls and four pyroclastic density current (PDC) signals were also monitored from 12 a.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. Monday.
The volcano's lava effusion resulted in lava flows down the Basud Gully (3.8 km), Bonga Gully (3.2 km), and Mi-isi Gully (1.6 km).
A crater glow remains fairly visible to the naked eye.
Some 1,829 tonnes of sulfur dioxide were emitted by Mayon Volcano on Sunday.
Moderate plumes were seen rising out of the crater before drifting in the west-southwest drift.
PHIVOLCS said Alert Level 3 (Intensified Unrest/Magmatic Unrest) remains in effect at Mayon Volcano.
It reiterated that entry into the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) should not be allowed.
Flying aircraft close to the volcano should likewise be prohibited, PHIVOLCS said.
Mayon Volcano poses the following possible hazards, PHIVOLCS said:
- rockfalls or landslides or avalanches;
- ballistic fragments;
- lava flows and lava fountaining;
- PDCs;
- moderate-sized explosions; and
- lahars during heavy and prolonged rainfall
