An eight-year-old boy died while at least 14 others were injured after two passenger buses collided in Malungon, Sarangani over the weekend.

Authorities said one of the buses had 41 passengers on board and 14 of them sustained injuries. They were brought to a hospital for treatment.

On the other hand, the 37 passengers of the other bus, including its 56-year-old driver, are safe.

The boy who died, a resident of Malalag, Davao del Sur, sustained head injuries and did not reach the hospital alive.

Based on investigation, one of the buses, which came from Davao City, allegedly lost control while traveling downwhill and crashed into an oncoming bus.

Police said the accident may have been caused by overspeeding.

“Overspeeding gyud to na hindi na-control na maabot niya tong bus na pababa. May istorya pa nga nigawas nga accordingly hindi niya daw nakita so ibig sabihin naghambal siya na di makita ibig sabihin paspas siya,” Malungon Municipal Municipal Police Station Chief, Lt. Col. Geovannie Ladeo, said.

Both drivers were taken into police custody as investigation into the incident continues. —Efren Yunting Mamac, GMA Regional TV News
