LTO summons motorists who threw punches in viral road rage incident in Laguna

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has summoned a motorcycle rider and the driver of a van who went viral on social media for a traffic altercation that ended up with them throwing punches at each other.

In a statement, the LTO said it issued show cause orders (SCOs) against the two motorists over the May 3, 2026 incident that was captured on video and uploaded on Facebook.

The incident happened at 10:30 p.m. in Calamba City, Laguna.

What initially began as a verbal argument ended up in a physical altercation between the two drivers.

The LTO ordered both of them to appear before the Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) on May 20 at 10 a.m.

They were told to submit a sworn explanation on why they should not be charged for reckless driving and for being improper persons to operate a motor vehicle.

The driver of the motorcycle is facing another charge for “compulsory registration of motor vehicles.”

Both vehicles were placed under LTO alarms. The two motorists were also ordered to surrender their driver’s licenses, which will be both placed under a 90-day preventive suspension.

LTO chief and Transportation Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanila reminded motorists that they should not be hot-headed on the road.

“Ang road rage ay hindi simpleng argumento, ito ay seryosong banta sa kaligtasan ng lahat. Walang puwang ang karahasan sa ating mga lansangan. Ang sinumang mapatunayang lumabag ay mananagot sa ilalim ng batas,” Lacanilao said.

(Road rage is not just a simple argument, it is a serious threat to everyone’s safety. Violence has no space on our streets. Anyone proven to have committed violations will be accountable under the law.)

Should the respondents fail to appear on the scheduled hearing date, the agency will resolve the complaints against them based on the evidence it has gathered so far. — JMA, GMA News
