Group pushes stronger protection for PH communities amid tourist misconduct
A party-list lawmaker has called on local governments to strengthen safeguards for communities, particularly indigenous peoples, amid growing concerns over reports of allegedly abusive and violent behavior involving tourists in the country.
In a statement, Solid North Party-list Rep. Ching Bernos said local government units (LGUs) must actively protect the welfare, culture, and way of life of residents while promoting responsible tourism.
“Local governments must actively protect the welfare and way of life, especially of indigenous communities, in the face of tourist abuse,” Bernos said.
The appeal came after reports of a recent incident in Siargao in which two unidentified men allegedly assaulted the owners of a café displaying a pro-Palestine flag.
“We must ensure that the welfare of our communities is always upheld and that the rights and practices of locals are respected,” said Bernos, vice chairperson of the House Committee on Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous Peoples.
The lawmaker emphasized the need for LGUs to adopt tourism plans that preserve the integrity of heritage and tourism sites while maintaining peace and order in communities.
“Kaya’t napakahalaga na may plano tayo kung paano natin maisusulong ang responsableng turismo. (We must have a plan for promoting responsible tourism). We have to keep in mind the absorptive capacity of our localities, and set aside resources for police, health workers, and other concerns,” she said.
Bernos also urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the alleged assault in Siargao and other reported incidents involving abusive conduct by tourists.
"Spread love and joy so that you can have a much more meaningful stay here,” the solon added. —MCG, GMA News
