The City of Naga in Camarines Sur has officially been declared a highly urbanized city (HUC), becoming the 34th city in the Philippines to receive the classification.

According to the official website of the Naga City government, the declaration came following a proclamation signed by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Wednesday.

The city government said the move places Naga among the country’s highly urbanized cities, which operate with greater administrative independence and expanded governance capacity.

Prior to the declaration, Naga City had formally requested national recognition as an HUC through a proposed resolution filed earlier this year.

The resolution said the status would help the city attain “greater administrative autonomy, improved access to national resources, and enhanced capacity for urban governance and development.”

Under the Local Government Code, cities may qualify for highly urbanized status if they meet population and income requirements set by law. —Sherylin Untalan/RF, GMA News
