3-month fishing ban implemented in Davao Gulf — BFAR
A three-month fishing ban was implemented on Davao Gulf as part of efforts to protect small pelagic fishes during their peak spawning period, according to a report on "24 Oras."
The ban began on June 1 and will last until August 31, 2026.
According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the closed fishing season aims to protect species such as the Big-Eyed Scad (matangbaka), Mackerel (alumahan), and Round Scad (galunggong).
Only registered fishermen are allowed to catch fish using authorized gears such as hook and line, gillnets, and fish pots.
Meanwhile, BFAR said the use of ring nets (kubkuban/likom) and bag nets (basnig/tapay-tapay) is strictly prohibited, regardless of the vessel's tonnage.
Violators, the agency said, face heavy fines ranging from P20,000 to P500,000, with imprisonment, confiscation of gear, and revocation of licenses. — BAP, GMA News
