Visayas grid placed on yellow alert on June 5, 2026

The Visayas grid was placed under a yellow alert for three hours on Friday due to high demand and the unavailability of several power plants, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

In an advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert would be in effect from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The grid operator said available capacity was projected at 2,608 megawatts (MW), while peak demand was expected to reach 2,379 MW.

According to the NGCP, a total of 25 power plants were unavailable or operating at reduced capacity, resulting in 929.8 MW being unavailable to the grid.

Eight power plants have been on forced outage since June 2026, while another eight have been out since May 2026. One plant has been on outage since March 2026, while three plants have remained offline since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.

In addition, 11 power plants were operating on derated capacities.

The NGCP said the yellow alert declaration was primarily due to the unavailability of large coal-fired power plants TVI 1, TVI 2, and PEDC 3, as well as a forecast of high electricity demand.

“A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement,” the NGCP said. —VAL, GMA News
