The provincial government of Sarangani on Wednesday declared a state of calamity amid the massive damage from the deadly magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the region on Monday.

Governor Rogelio Pacquiao said the state of calamity was recommended by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

“The declaration enables the provincial government and local government units to mobilize emergency funds, expedite relief and rehabilitation efforts, and provide immediate assistance to affected communities while ensuring a faster and more coordinated disaster response,” the Sarangani Provincial Information Office said in a statement.

The earthquake, whose epicenter was located near the municipality of Maasim, left a trail of casualties, injuries, and displaced families, alongside widespread damage to both public and private infrastructures.

The Bureau of Fire Protection said the reported death toll from the earthquake has risen to 53 as of Thursday.

Meanwhile, the town of Glan has been left virtually cut off and difficult to reach, with residents struggling to access basic necessities such as food, water, electricity, and telecommunications.

“Governor Pacquiao, along with Vice Governor Danny Martinez, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan members, heads of offices, and other officials promptly convened on June 10 to discuss and implement necessary and time-critical measures to address the impact of the calamity, particularly in towns heavily affected such as Glan and Malapatan, as well as the municipalities of Alabel, Malungon, Kiamba, Maasim, and Maitum,” the provincial information office added. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/BM, GMA News
