Aftershocks from Mindanao earthquake now close to 4,000

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it has recorded 3,860 aftershocks as of 9 a.m. Friday following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.

According to PHIVOLCS, 966 of these aftershocks were plotted, while 64 were felt by residents in affected areas.

The strength of the recorded aftershocks ranged from magnitude 1.2 to 6.4.

PHIVOLCS obtained the data from the General Santos Seismic Station and the Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental Seismic Station.

According to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) on Friday, the reported death toll from the June 8 earthquake has increased to 55.

In an update, OCD deputy spokesperson Diego Mariano said 1,120 people were reported injured while 31 others were reported missing. —VAL, GMA News
