Authorities raided a meat processing facility in Bacolor town in Pampanga on Monday and discovered around 40 tons of imported meat products worth an estimated P4.5 million, many of which were either expired or nearing expiration.

According to an exclusive report by John Consulta on "24 Oras Weekend," the operation was carried out by the Regional Special Operations Group of the Philippine National Police Region 3, together with personnel from the Food and Drug Administration and the National Meat Inspection Service.

Police Brig. Gen. Jess Mendez, PRO 3 director, said the meat products, imported from Brazil, India, and other parts of Asia, emitted a foul odor when inspected.

During the raid, officials found multiple violations inside the facility, including poor storage conditions, rusty processing equipment, and the presence of rats.

Mendez said improper storage temperatures may have caused the meat products to spoil.

He said the facility also posed a serious public health risk, noting that its permit from the FDA had expired in 2003.

Authorities warned that contaminated meat products could endanger consumers, especially children, amid the growing demand for ready-to-cook food products.

Two individuals, including the facility owner, were arrested and may face charges for alleged violations of the FDA Act and the Consumer Act.

The confiscated meat products, classified as “hot meat,” are set to be destroyed once a court order is issued.

Mendez also reminded the public to be vigilant when buying meat products and to purchase only from authorized sellers that meet government safety standards.—MCG, GMA News
