Nearly 1.6M persons affected by M7.8 Mindanao earthquake — NDRRMC
About 1.59 million individuals have been affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore Maasim, Sarangani, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Based on the NDRRMC's Situational Report No. 13 released on Sunday, 1,599,350 individuals, or 375,664 families, were affected by the earthquake in 580 barangays in the Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN.
Of these numbers, 22,109 people are in evacuation centers, while 63,351 were served outside these centers.
The NDRRMC also reported a total of 77 fatalities as a result of the earthquake after an additional death was confirmed from the list shared last Friday.
“One person in Glan, Sarangani, previously reported as both dead and missing, has been verified as dead and has consequently been removed from the list of missing persons,” NDRRMC stated.
Earlier, the death toll was revised from 78 on Thursday to 76 on Friday following the validation of casualty reports.
Sunday’s report also showed 1,339 injured individuals.
Meanwhile. 31 people remain missing.
NDRRMC said the changes in the figures are due to ongoing validation.
There are also 130 road sections and 47 bridges affected by the earthquake in the Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN.
Power lines in 47 cities and municipalities were affected by the earthquake, of which 14 have had their power restored.
NDRRMC also logged 68,511 partially damaged houses and 14,234 totally damaged houses in the Zamboanga Peninsula, the Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
An estimated P1.356B worth of infrastructure damage was also recorded in the same regions.
NDRRMC said as of Saturday, P318.66 million worth of assistance was provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Office of Civil Defense, and local government units.
A total of 456,070 family food pacts were also distributed in the Zamboanga Peninsula, the Davao Region, and SOCCSKSARGEN.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit offshore Maasim, Sarangani at 7:37 a.m. on June 8.
On Saturday, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) released satellite data showing landslides that occurred after the devastating Mindanao earthquake.
PhilSA's map showed earthquake-induced landslides affecting barangays Calabanit, Ilaya, San Vicente, Congan, and Calpidong in Glan, Sarangani; and barangays Butuan, Patulang, Sugal, Nuing, San Isidro, and Batulan in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.
The agency said that the total area possibly affected by landslides is about 137.87 hectares.
PhilSA said landslide areas were identified through observing vegetation loss between pre-disaster (01 June 2026) and post-disaster (14 June 2026) images from Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B satellites of the European Space Agency. —RF, GMA News
