The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Saturday morning released time-lapse video footage of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island emitting ash anew, a stark reminder of its continued restive activity.

In a Facebook post, PHIVOLCS said it documented Kanlaon's ash emission at 5:02 a.m. Saturday.

Rays of the morning's sunrise could be seen glowing through the moving clouds and billowing ash in the Negros sky.

PHIVOLCS said the event generated grayish plumes that rose 300 meters above the crater before drifting southwest.

The visually striking images were documented by the Mansalanao Observation Station in La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

Alert Level 2, indicating a moderate level of unrest, remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano.

PHIVOLCS elevated Kanlaon's status to Alert Level 2 on June 3, Friday, following a moderately explosive eruption at the crater summit at 6:51 p.m.

State volcanologists logged a six-minute earthquake and a five-kilometer voluminous eruption plume during that event.

Pyroclastic density currents or PDCs were seen descending two to three kilometers on the southern slopes.

Rumbling sounds were heard in La Castellana and La Carlota City, Negros Occidental and Canlaon City, Negros Oriental.

Coarse ashfall and sulfurous odors were reported by residents in multiple areas. — VDV, GMA News
