300 undernourished children in Aurora given aid by GMA Kapuso Foundation

One of the challenges families face in Maria Aurora, Aurora is to have proper and healthy meals for their children. It got even more difficult when they fell victim to Super Typhoon Uwan in the past year.

To help the children get a taste of healthy meals, 300 children will be given aid by the GMA Kapuso Foundation under its Give a Gift, Feed a Child Project.

Anne, a seven-year-old from Maria Aurora, usually eats rice with soy sauce, oil, or sugar as her viand. This is because her grandmother, Teresita Bocaulo, does not make enough income making walis tingting and cutting grass.

Teresita also raises seven grandchildren, while Anne's mother is an overseas Filipino worker who rarely sends money because life abroad is difficult.

"Inuuna ko po talaga 'yung bigas, tapos maski wala po kaming ulam, OK lang po kasi kulang po talaga, wala kaming pang tustos," Teresita said.

According to the weight for age table of the World Health Organization, seven-year-olds need to be at 22 kilos. Anne is only at 15.5 kilos, the weight for four-year-olds.

Meanwhile, data from the national nutrition survey in 2021 showed that two out of 10 children aged five to nine are underweight and lacking in height in Aurora.

This Nutrition Month, 300 undernourished children from five schools in the province will be part of GMA Kapuso Foundation's Give a Gift, Feed a Child Project. They will be given healthy food for a span of 120 days.

"Kung may wastong nutrisyon, hindi lamang ang kanyang pagiisip, 'yun din kanyang wellness," Asuncion Bitong, Maria Aurora Public School District Supervisor said.
