A police patrol that chanced upon an illegal motorcycle race along a highway in Valladolid, Negros Occidental attempted to chase the riders.

According to the report of GMA Regional TV’s Aileen Pedreso in “24 Oras” on Wednesday, several motorcycles were captured on video speeding down the road in Barangay Palaka.

“They have no permit from the barangay. What they are doing is illegal street betting. No one has coordinated with us regarding any race on the highway,” said Barangay Palaka Kagawad Roger Pelayo.

A police mobile patrol happened to be patrolling the area when the drag race took place. Officers tried to chase the riders, but they managed to escape.

"We've seen that this drag racing isn't just happening in Valladolid. Based on the posts we saw, they supposedly started racing from Bago City all the way here to Valladolid. I hope they put a stop to this,” said traffic investigator P/Master Sergeant Jobert Pancho.

Residents living near the highway say these races pose a danger to the community—complaining that these are loud and could cause accidents.

“We are worried. It’s such a nuisance. We can’t help but think if our families will be hit by those motorcycles,” one resident said.

The Valladolid Police said it is still investigating the matter. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA News
