LOOK: Lava flows from Mayon Volcano crater as effusive eruption continues

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Saturday released images of continued lava effusion of restive Mayon Volcano in Albay.

State volcanologists released three images of lava effusion with strombolian activity documented on Friday, July 17, from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

"Effusive eruption at Mayon Volcano continues for the 194th consecutive day, generating incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents or 'uson', and rockfalls," PHIVOLCS said.

According to Britannica, effusive eruptions are generally less violent than explosive eruptions, with molten rock or lava flowing onto the Earth's surface.

Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon, indicating intensified or magmatic unrest.

In its monitoring bulletin from midnight Friday until midnight Saturday, lava flowed for 1.5 kms at the Basud gully, 1.8 kms at Bonga, and 2 kms at Mi-isi.

A total of 180 volcanic earthquakes with 13 volcanic tremors were logged. Tremors lasted as long as 25 minutes.

PHIVOLCS also reported 185 rockfall and 18 pyroclastic density current signals.

Mayon emitted 3,748 tons of sulfur dioxide on July 17. A moderate ash plume rose 1,800 meters above the crater, drifting south to southeast.

Entry into the six-kilometer permanent danger zone remains in effect. Aircraft are prohibited from flying close to the volcano. — VDV, GMA News
