Angono barangay secretary on way to work shot dead by riding-in-tandem 

A 44-year-old man died after being shot by a riding-in-tandem in Angono, Rizal last July 17, Friday.

In a Balitanghali report by GMA News reporter EJ Gomez on Monday, authorities identified the victim as Barangay San Vicente Secretary Freddie Cañeva, who was on his way to work when the incident happened.

“Tinamaan ng dalawang bala ang victim. Binaril siya from behind, at agad nakatakbo ang ating mga suspek,” Angono police chief Police Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Azurin said.

(The victim was hit by two bullets. He was shot from behind, and our suspects immediately fled.)

According to some witnesses, the victim was walking in a street when the suspects shot him.

Cañeva underwent an operation, but later died.

His family said that they have no idea what could be the motive for his killing.

“Sa totoo lang po, walang kaaway ang asawa ko. Nag-iisip kami mag-ina kung bakit nagawa sa asawa ko po ‘yon na barilin siya nang ganon lang,” the victim’s wife said.

(Honestly, my husband had no enemies. My daughter and I are trying to figure out why anyone would do that to my husband—to just shoot him like that.)

“My father is just going to his usual work, ready to serve the people, and hindi ko magawang maisip kung bakit, bakit nila ginawa yon (and I can't bring myself to understand why—why they did that to him),” their daughter added.

During a follow-up operation in Cainta, Rizal, the police spotted the suspects on a motorcycle, but they managed to escape. The police recovered their motorcycle.

“Nakita namin kung saan tumawid ‘yung ating mga suspek sa slum area diyan sa Cainta, Barangay San Andres. ‘Yung lugar ay kabisado niya… napakasikip ng lugar, nakatakas ito at nagtatakbo ito sa mga bubong ng bahay,” Azurin said.

(We saw where our suspects crossed into the slum area there in Cainta, Barangay San Andres. They knew the area well... the place is very cramped, and they managed to escape by running across the roofs of the houses.)
