There could be power interruptions in the Visayas and Mindanao until Monday evening after red alert statuses were hoisted over the regions, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) advised.

The NGCP said the red alert over the Visayas Grid is expected from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

In the Mindanao Grid, the red alert is expected from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

A red alert status is issued when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirements.

Yellow alert is also issued at both grids, between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. for the Visayas Grid; and 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. for the Mindanao Grid.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

The NGCP explained that the declaration of red and yellow alerts over the Visayas Grid was due to limited power imports from Mindanao brought by high system demand.

Meanwhile, the red and yellow alert declarations in Mindanao were due to an increase in forecasted system demand. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA News
