Magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolts Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake hit off Balut Island, Sarangani in Davao Occidental early Friday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

The PHIVOLCS earlier reported that a magnitude 5.9 quake occurred at 2:39 a.m. with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake was tectonic in origin with a depth of 48 kilometers.

"This is an aftershock of the 2026 June Mw7.8 Offshore Sarangani and Mw6.5 Offshore Davao Occidental earthquake," PHIVOLCS said.

No damage and no aftershocks are expected following the earthquake, the agency said. — BAP, GMA News
