Gun recovered from 14-year-old student’s bag in Cebu school

A revolver was recovered from the school bag of a 14-year-old student at Lut-od National High School in Pinamungajan, Cebu on Thursday, according to the provincial police.

In a statement, the Cebu Police Provincial Police said the .357 Smith & Wesson Magnum revolver without ammunition was discovered around 3:50 p.m. after a teacher conducted a surprise inspection.

“Initial investigation disclosed that the firearm allegedly belonged to the minor’s grandfather and had been kept inside a cabinet at their residence in Purok Santol, Barangay Lut-od,” the police said.

“The minor reportedly took the firearm from the cabinet and brought it to school on August 20,” it added.

According to the police, the child is currently under the care of the grandparents as the parents are working outside the town.

The student was turned over to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office. Appropriate intervention for the minor is being undertaken in coordination with the office and the child’s parents or guardians, according to the police.

Cebu Police Provincial Office director Police Colonel Abubakar Udang Mangelen Jr. said, “This incident demonstrates the importance of vigilance and proactive safety measures inside our schools.”

“We commend the school personnel for immediately reporting the discovery and seeking police assistance. Their prompt action helped ensure that the situation was contained before it could potentially lead to harm,” he added.
